Cambridge Public Health Department

THE PLAN

Sometimes the stars align. Cambridge Public Health Department (CPHD) was looking for a freelance designer to create their 2024 Annual Report, but that person had to live in Cambridge and have a background in healthcare. The objective of the report was to raise awareness and educate stakeholders about the work being done by CPHD. The target audience included city council, city and CHA leadership, as well as community members and partners. In addition to creating an historical record, the report had to communicate how vital CPHD is to the community because public health matters! The tone needed to be warm, friendly, caring, approachable, and professional.

THE PLAY

Three concepts were presented and the chosen direction was “What We Stand For.” Public health is personal, so the design has a handcrafted look with torn paper, grainy imagery, and brush stroke typography. The grainy, sketch effect also served the purpose of converting low resolution, mobile phone photography into high resolution imagery for print and signage. The look of the annual report also established a design platform for additional communications, including the Community Health Needs Assessment and National Public Health Week.
